What to Do During a Power Outage

Did you know that experts recommend people keep their refrigerators closed, refrain from using a gas stove to heat their homes, and disconnect their appliances when the power goes out?

A power outage can happen at any time. Therefore, it is important that you know what to do when this happens.

Even though there are steps you can take to prepare, there are still several important things you’ll need to do whenever the electricity goes out. To help you out, we have written a guide. Read on to find out more.

Make Sure That the Power Is Actually Out

If you experience a power outage in your home, you will need to do your best to figure out what the cause is. The first thing you should do is check your main electrical panel to find out if a breaker tripped.

Breakers have fuses in order to prevent them from overheating and damaging devices. Before you try to flip the breaker back on, make sure that you unplug everything that is on that circuit.

If nothing happens after you flip the breaker back on, the power is probably out in your entire neighborhood or area.

If the power comes back on after your flip the breaker, you’ll know that the power only went out in your home.

If you constantly need to flip the same breaker to restart your home’s power, you should make sure to call an emergency electrician.

Inform Your Local Utility Company

You’ll need to report the power outage to your local utility company right away.

If you don’t know whom to call, look for the TDSP (Transmission & Distribution Service Providers), EDU (Electric Distribution Utilities), or TDU (Transmission and Distribution Utility) for your community.

Unplug Your Appliances and Devices

You’ll need to unplug all of your appliances and digital devices in order to protect them. Regardless of whether the power goes out for ten minutes or two days, the risk of harming your appliances is the same.

If you don’t unplug your appliances and devices, you’ll risk damaging them if there is a power surge once the power comes back.

Keep Your Family Safe and at Ease

Train your children so that they know exactly what to do when the power goes out. This includes letting them know where to find flashlights and knowing where to go.

The best place to gather with your family during a power outage is in a place that is comfortable. If the power goes out because of a storm, you should make sure to gather in a location that does not have windows.
